Zandari Festa 2018 – Mini Interviews 2

Korea’s top music showcase festival, Zandari Festa, is already underway for 2018! ‘Zandari’ aims to form bridges between Korean and international artists, audiences and music industry executives. Running from 4th-7th October, festival-goers can watch established acts and first-time performers on stage, experience Korea’s indie scene as well as enjoy international talent from countries such as the UK, Japan and France. You can buy tickets (including 1 day passes) here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/2018-zandari-festa-tickets-50059189383.

Over a packed 4 days (in Hongdae, Seoul), there will be music showcases, special stages and conferences taking place, as well as parties where you can rub shoulders with the bands and industry experts alike! Some of the performers have already compared the festival to the infamous South by Southwest!

We’ve been checking out the line-up for 2018, and picked out a few acts to recommend this year! Have a read of our mini interviews with H a Lot from Korea, Omni Sight from Japan and The Blind Suns from France. We’ve also included a song that we enjoyed from each artist and Facebook links so that you can follow your new favourites on social media! H a Lot’s responses were provided by drummer Jae Hyuk Choi

Can you introduce yourselves and your music?

Hi, I’m Jae Hyuk! I’m the drummer of H a Lot. We’re a rock band in Korea. We have the spirit and attitude of newbies, but we also have a lot of experience. It’s those experiences that will help us move forward.

What are your hopes and expectations for Zandari Festa 2018?

H a Lot is a new band that just started, so this will be a good experience for us. I hope we can let a lot of people know about our music and also make many new friends from all over the world.

Will you watch the performances of any other acts in the lineup this year? Who are you looking forward to seeing?

I’m looking forward to seeing Aassa and Jambinai. I should mention that I also play drums in Jambinai, so I’ll be enjoying them from onstage!

How do you think Zandari Festa compares with other festivals?

Zandari Festa is like the Korean version of South by Southwest (SXSW). There are so many good band and they can also show their music to lots of music fans and music industry delegates from many other countries. This festival also does a good job of showing the many diverse styles of music that exist in Korea.

Do you think the organisers have struck the right balance between the choice of lineup (both Korean and international), networking opportunities and talks from industry experts?

Yes, definitely. I’ve been watching Zandari Festa since its beginning and admire how the festival continues to grow and improve. I believe in and respect them.

How do you decide on the setlist for your live shows? How do you plan to make your Zandari Festa showcase stand out to the audience?

I think live shows should tell stories. We care a lot about that kind of running narrative. During our Zandari Festa showcase we plan to show our spirit and energy to everyone.

Omni Sight

Omni Sight’s responses were provided by bassist and synthesizer player Motohiko Sato

Can you introduce yourselves and your music?

We’re an electronic music band based in Kyoto, Japan. We create dance-oriented groove music. Our sound has organic, mighty beats created by raw bass and drums, and also has unique cosmic soundscapes with an experimental and respectful attitude for clubbing music.

What are your hopes and expectations for Zandari Festa 2018?

We expect to have a good time and to meet lots of music fans, musicians from around the world and industry people.

Have you played at the festival before? What are some of your best memories from playing at the festival in the past?

Yes! We played at Zandari Festa in 2017 and had many fantastic encounters with bands like Eyre Llew from the UK, Playtime Festival in Mongolia and more.

Will you watch the performances of any other acts in the lineup this year? Who are you looking forward to seeing?

We’ve played with Eyre Llew in Japan and also with the Korean band Laybricks in Mongolia. Both of them are amazing and we’re looking forward to seeing them perform again in Seoul.

How do you think Zandari Festa compares with other festivals? Do you think the organisers have struck the right balance between the choice of lineup (both Korean and international), networking opportunities and talks from industry experts?

It’s a good festival and the lineup has a lot of diversity and presents so many different genres. But I’m a bit disappointed that so many cool performances are all happening simultaneously because it means people can’t see everything.

How do you decide on the setlist for your live shows? How do you plan to make your Zandari Festa showcase stand out to the audience?

For Zandari Festa, we’re going to try to play a more minimal style with powerful sounds because we want to make the audience dance to our beat.

The Blind Suns

The Blind Suns’ responses were provided by vocalist Dorota Kuszewska

Can you introduce yourselves and your music?

We’re a French-Polish band living in France but spending a lot of time abroad touring, especially in the US. Our music is very influenced by Americana, old psych-surf bands from the ‘60s, dream pop from the ‘80s and more modern stuff as well.

What are your hopes and expectations for Zandari Festa 2018?

It’s going to be our first time in Asia ever, and we’re hoping to meet new people, a new culture and to find a receptive audience that could lead us to come back for a bigger tour in the future.

Will you watch the performances of any other acts in the lineup this year? Who are you looking forward to seeing?

We’ve just seen the full lineup on the website and we have to admit that except for the French bands playing, we haven’t ever heard of the others. We are really looking forward to discovering the Korean scene, though.

How do you think Zandari Festa compares with other festivals? Do you think the organisers have struck the right balance between the choice of lineup (both Korean and international), networking opportunities and talks from industry experts?

It seems like Zandari Festa is the Asian version of the famous South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas. We’ve played at that festival three times and it’s a perfect combination of a classic festival with a great crowd and professional opportunities to bring your career to a higher level.

How do you decide on the setlist for your live shows? How do you plan to make your Zandari Festa showcase stand out to the audience?

It’s never easy to agree on a perfect setlist, especially when you already have a few albums out as we do. We try to personalize it for every single show we play. Most of the time it depends on the place, the atmosphere, the timing and the way we feel about the audience.  Every show is different, and we always try to come to the best compromise between the songs that people like the most on the albums, the songs that sound nice live, and the songs we love to play. We want people to feel something more during our shows than what they can experience listening to the record at home. Live shows should make people dream. This is our plan and our final goal at Zandari Festa.
