Zandari Festa 2018 – Mini Interviews 1

Zandari Festa, a large music showcase festival, is taking place at a number of venues within Hongdae (Seoul, South Korea) again this year. It will run from 4th- 7th October 2018, and feature over 100 acts…almost 110! Over the 4 days, you can watch so many bands perform with the purchase of a wristband. Not only are there Korean bands, you can also find international bands too! Keep a look out for some of our previous K-SPOTLIGHT interviewees playing at Zandari Festa 2018!

Visit the Zandari Festa website at http://www.zandarifesta.com/ for more information about tickets and the location of the venues.

We’ve scanned the line-up this year and picked out some bands to recommend! We were also able to ask some questions to our favourites, so this first Zandari Festa 2018 article will feature mini-interviews with AdiosAudio and Cogason from South Korea, and Red Rum Club from the UK. Take a listen to our recommended tracks by each band while you read! Part 2 of our mini interviews is now published – read it here.

Can you introduce yourselves and your music?

Hi, we’re AdiosAudio from Korea. We’re an emo-pop band that is always trying to show our feelings and the things we want to say through our music and live performances. We sing about our lives and express our feelings. We also hope our stories will be helpful for those who have hard times.

This will be our first time playing at Zandari Festa and we’re really excited for the opportunity.

What are your hopes and expectations for Zandari Festa 2018?

Zandari Festa is a fun weekend and we’re hoping for just one thing – we want to make whoever comes to see our showcase happy.

Will you watch the performances of any other acts in the lineup this year? Who are you looking forward to seeing?

We’ll definitely be checking out showcases by other bands, especially the acts traveling to the festival from overseas. We’re looking forward to seeing Karkosa, Eyre Llew, Red Rum Club and Hot Soles.

How do you think Zandari Festa compares with other festivals? Do you think the organisers have struck the right balance between the choice of lineup (both Korean and international), networking opportunities and talks from industry experts?

We think that Zandari Festa is a very well organized festival and has struck a good balance so that’s there’s value for music fans, musicians and music industry professionals. It’s not easy for indie musicians in Korea to connect with overseas promoters and labels, so this festival provides a great opportunity for everyone involved.

How do you decide on the setlist for your live shows? How do you plan to make your Zandari Festa showcase stand out to the audience?

We work together to choose our setlists. As for standing out at Zandari Festa, we’re going to play with a lot of energy and passion. It’s always important for us to do our very best onstage. We think that’s the best way to stand out for every audience we play for.

Cogason

Cogason’s responses were provided by guitarist Kiwon Lee

Can you introduce yourselves and your music?

Hi, we’re Cogason, a four-piece indie band playing guitar driven pop/rock songs inspired by ’80 and ‘90s alt-rock bands. Our music is made up of simple guitar chords and catchy melodies with easy, cute and mind-touching lyrics. Once you listen to it, you will never forget it!

What are your hopes and expectations for Zandari Festa 2018?

Zandari Festa is one of the biggest indie music festivals in Korea. We hope to meet and play for many Korean and overseas music fans and members of the music industry who are not familiar with us yet.

Will you watch the performances of any other acts in the lineup this year? Who are you looking forward to seeing?

Of course! Personally, I’m really looking forward to watching the Korean punk band Drinking Boys and Girls Choir because I love their playful songs, but I haven’t seen them perform yet.

How do you think Zandari Festa compares with other festivals? Do you think the organisers have struck the right balance between the choice of lineup (both Korean and international), networking opportunities and talks from industry experts?

I heard about 40 international acts will join this festival with more than 60 Korean bands. Zandari Festa boasts one of the largest lineups in Korea and does a good job of balancing the amount of overseas and domestic talent on the bill. The festival has many conferences and after parties to give musicians opportunities to learn and network. We think this is going to be a great opportunity for us to further develop our relationships in the music industry.

How do you decide on the setlist for your live shows? How do you plan to make your showcase stand out to the audience?

Our Zandari Festa showcase will be our first performance after a few months of vacation. We’re ready to explode onstage will all of the energy we’ve saved up and the brand new songs we’ll be sharing at the fest. For Zandari Festa, we’ve made our setlist a perfect mixture of our danceable and ballad numbers, so don’t forget to check us out on Sunday, October 7 at Evans Lounge!

Red Rum Club

Red Rum Club’s responses were provided by bassist Simon Hepworth

Can you introduce yourselves and your music? What do you think you do better than other bands out there?

We’re Red Rum Club, the six-piece Tarantino-Esque Scouse Americana.

We write choruses, we pride ourselves on being an actual ‘band’ and do everything together, spend time together and have a relationship outside of the music.

What are your hopes and expectations for Zandari Festa 2018?

We want it to be a Seoul-ful experience. We’ll take everything we can from the experience and hopefully widen our audience in South Korea.

Will you watch the performances of any other acts in the lineup this year? Who are you looking forward to seeing?

We intend to watch as many acts as possible during our time at Zandari Festa. One group we’re looking forward to seeing are Sheffield’s Hot Soles.

How do you think Zandari Festa compares with other festivals? Do you think the organisers have struck the right balance between the choice of lineup (both Korean and international), networking opportunities and talks from industry experts?

It seems to be a well-structured, professional festival. It’s great the way they give international bands a big stage and chance. This is sometimes lacking in UK festivals. It gives artist a chance to network on an international and intercontinental stage.

How do you decide on the setlist for your live shows? How do you plan to make your showcase stand out to the audience?

With our debut album Matador coming out in January, we want to push those tracks as much as we can. They’re all strong songs. Our slick set will stand out hopefully!
