Named as the best festival in Korea by the ministry of culture, sports, and tourism, the Hwancheon Sancheoneo is one you definitely don’t want to miss out on. Although the festival has many different activities for everyone to enjoy, the main is ice fishing for Sancheoneo.

What is Sancheoneo?

A popular native freshwater fish, also referred to as the Queen of the Valley. Well loved for its beauty and health properties.

People come from all over to try to catch themselves a fish. Some of the braver souls even don shorts and tee-shirts to try their hand at the barehand fishing activities. Makes us cold just thinking about it! But don’t worry, a warm foot bath is available to help thaw out any frozen participants in this activity.

If fishing isn’t really your thing there are many other activities you can enjoy. The entire town of Hwacheon pitches in to help contribute to this wintery event. Lights and lanterns are strung up in a spectacular display along Seondeung Street. The Ice plaza boasts many impressive and large-scale ice sculptures, which are very popular for the perfect selfie background. Traditional folk games, and photo zones, and of course traditional food, which as we all know is essential to any festival’s success!

As this is a winter festival, plenty of snow and ice-based activities available as well. Traditional Korean sleds and sleds from all around the world are found in the ice sledding experience zone. A 100-meter snow slope and a 40-meter ice slope providing the perfect opportunities for fast-paced bobsleighing fun. There is even Ice soccer and Ice go-kart racing as well. All in all, this truly is a festival that anyone can enjoy!
