If you’re planning your summer getaway to South Korea this year, there are a vast amount of things to see and do. Apart from the obvious commercialisation of the party capital Seoul; South Korea has many hidden gems that can be enjoyed throughout the summer months. Hot summers are supposed to be spent at the beach of course. So why not visit a coastal part of the country, where you can experience their traditions and customs?

Firstly, we have the sunny, fishing village of Sokcho, located in the far North East of South Korea in Gangwon-do (강원도). This town is known for its love of squid! Dried, fermented and stuffed. The most famous dish is a “squid sundae” (오징어 순대). A whole squid is stuffed with a variety of ingredients, and then steamed. One of the most interesting and historical places that can be found here is “The Abai Village” (아바이 마을); a beautiful village near the beach. This area is known to play a crucial part in Korean history, as many elderly people fled from North Korea, during the Korean War; and the town is now home to many people of North Korean ancestry. The streets are lined with small Korean houses that are reminiscent of Seoul of the 1970’s.. If you are looking for simplicity and peacefulness, then this unique place by the sea is the place to be.

Yeosu is a picturesque port city, located along the southern coast of South Korea. Famous for its seafood, flowers, beaches and marinas; Yeosu’s shoreline is sparsely populated with cliffs, islands and peninsulas. This hidden gem is most beautiful at night.

Busan is South Korea’s second largest city, and is home to Haeundae Beach (해운대해수욕장) – a very popular and common summer destination. This beach is busy all year round, and plays host with a variety of beach festivals. If culture is what you’re after, then why not visit the Beach Culture Centre and the Beach Library. Looking to get physical? Visit Folk Square, where you can enjoy traditional games, tug of war and Korean wrestling. During the first week of August this year, The Busan Sea Festival is taking place at Haeundae Beach, Gwangalli Beach (광안리해수욕장), Songdo Beach (송도해수욕장), Dadaepo Beach (다대포 해수욕장), Songjeong Beach (송정해수욕장) and the surrounding area. During this festival you will come across a number of cultural events, hands-on programs and workshops. Each beach has a variety of concerts, performances and proceedings that are suitable for all ages. And of course there will be an opening ceremony with fireworks! The very first festival took place in 1996, in celebration of Busan, the beautiful harbour city. So there you have it! Three spectacular places that you must visit; three different experiences away from the usual hustle and bustle of city life.
