About:

For this month’s language section, we’re bringing you some interesting phrases as always, along with the concept of counters and how to use them. Take a look below to find out more.

Topic: Sentence Word Order

Concept: Counters (Measure words)

In Korean, different counters are used depending on certain noun groups. For example, one would not use the same counter when counting animals and humans. When counting dogs one would say 두마리 or du-mari where 두 means two and 마리 is the counter used to count animals. On the other hand, when counting people one would say 두명 or du-myeong where 명 is the counter used to count people. Listed below are some common counters used in Korean.

명 – myeong = people

마리 – mari = animals

개 – gae = items, objects

대 – dae = machines, cars

장 – jang = sheets of paper

권 – kwon = books

Interesting Phrase: 썸

For one to be in a 썸 or “something” in Korea, it means that one is in a flirtatious relationship with another person. Technically, both are not in a relationship yet but have romantic feelings and are at the stage where both might go back and forth in a sort of “tug of war”. It is the phase before both explicitly reveal their feelings to one another. This phrase is commonly used in Korean dramas to express this sort of relationship.

Example:

나 지금 썸 타고 있어. Na-jigeum-sseom-tago-isseo = I am in “something” with someone now.

  • 나: na – I
  • 지금: jigeum – now
  • 썸: sseom – “something”
  • 타고: tago – verb used with 썸 to say you are in “something” with someone
  • 있어: isseo – am/have
