Themed Cafes: A Korean Phenomenon

Café culture plays a big part of Korean society and everyday life. Whether it’s meeting for a quick chat with friends, or a way to unwind, there are a variety of cafes to suit everyone’s needs.

Widespread café themes include animals and popular characters; here are a few of my favourites.

Charlie Brown Café

This is located in Incheon (인천), and is a great place to reminisce your childhood days, with Charlie and the crew. The décor isn’t overwhelming, and features life-sized statues of your favourite CB characters.

Hello Kitty Café

This café is located in Hongdae(홍대), Hyehwa( 혜화), Sinchon (신촌), and throughout the rest of Seoul. With cutesy, pink furnishings, you can find kawaii food and drink items on this menu; all garnished with Kitty White’s face.

Angel In-Us Coffee

A number of branches can be found in the Seoul Metropolitan area; my favourite location is located in Hapjeong (합정). You will always find a chic and relaxing atmosphere upon visiting.

Thanks Nature Café

This sheep café, (yes I said sheep), has a clean and Zen-like atmosphere. Decorated with greenery, and portraits of animals, the two resident sheep are sanitary and very well groomed.

Cat Café Myeongdong ()/Gangnam()

The locations are in the name itself.  These cafes are odour free, which is great, considering the amount of cats that are lounging around. Before entering, you will have to remove your shoes and sanitize your hands. If you’re a cat lover, then this is the place for you!

Bauhaus

Bahaus is a dog café located near Hapjeong (합정) Station. Here you can pet and play with the dogs all day; the only rule is that you must purchase drinks.

So there you have it, just a minuscule amount of the quirky cafes that South Korea has to offer.  With such variety, you’re bound to find at least one that takes your fancy.  As they say “when in Rome…” Or in this case, Korea…
