South Korea has something for any skin issue you can think of, in this new series of articles we will endeavor to help you find the right Korean products to help you face any skin issues you may be dealing with. The first issue we will be tackling is hyperpigmentation, more commonly known as an uneven complexion.
Let’s take a look at some of the causes and preventions of hyperpigmentation.
Repeated exposure to UV rays without protection causes sun damage to your skin. Your skin produces more melanin to help protect itself from the sun and as a result, your skin may develop brown spots and an uneven tone. It is imperative that we protect our skin from the harmful UV rays if we are going to be outside. Try and apply some form of SPF every day, whether it be in a moisturizer, or a sunscreen (If at all possible avoid sunscreens filled with chemicals, these can cause all kinds of problems for your skin.)
In Korea, UV protective hats, clothes, and make-up are very common ways of sun protection. Korea takes their sun protection very seriously, it isn’t abnormal for people to completely remove their make-up and reapply sunscreen before putting all their make-up back on!
Here are some of our favourite sunscreens: TONY MOLY Magic Food Mango Mild Sun Block, LABAN Sun Cream Gold UV 50+ PA+++, COSRX Aloe Soothing Sun Cream SPF 50 PA+++.
~Lack of Sleep~
Lack of sleep can cause many problems for your skin, so making sure we are getting our full 8 hours is very important to maintaining a healthy complexion. Plus, more sleep means less panda! Woohoo~
Scarring can leave the skin darkened in the areas that were damaged, this is most commonly seen with acne scars that weren’t properly treated, but may be a result of other injuries as well.
If you struggle with acne scars or any kind of scars we suggest you check out these products: Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin C Serum, Elizavecca Milky Piggy 100% Pure Centella Asiatica, COSRX Advanced 92 All In One Cream, COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patch (to prevent further acne scars). Nobody wants to have a potato face! T.T
This is a problem that may be more common for people who live in the city. Air and traffic-related pollution may penetrate the skin and cause discoloration and brown spots. With how air pollutants can affect our skin, it’s a good idea to cleanse daily. Using a cleanser that is not going to strip our skin of all its natural oils is always a good idea. Toning helps remove any remaining dirt or debris the cleanser may have left behind, restores your skin’s PH balance, while also nourishing, and hydrating our skin.
Some excellent products that we use are: Innisfree Green Tea Cleansing Foam, Nature Republic Soothing & Moisture Aloe Vera Cleansing Gel Foam, Klairs Gentle Black Deep Cleansing Oil, COSRX Galactomyces Alcohol-Free Toner, Skinfood Premium Tomato Whitening Toner, Secret Key Snail Repairing Toner.
Build up of dead skin cells can affect your skin tone by creating a dull and lifeless look that I’m sure most of you would agree with us in saying “it ain’t cute!” Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and helps prepare the skin to better absorb any serums or moisturizers that you may be applying next. Try and use an extremely gentle micro exfoliant to avoid damaging your skin with daily use. Not everyone can exfoliate every day, if you have irritable and sensitive skin then this should only be done twice a week.
Some of our favourite exfoliants are: Holika Holika Smooth Egg Skin Peeling Gel, Skinfood Black Sugar Perfect Essential Scrub, TOSOWOONG Black Sugar Scrub.
~Lack of Hydration~
You may be tired of hearing it, “Drink more water if you want good skin.” It is true however, water helps to flush impurities out of our bodies and helps us to continue running smoothly, all of which is entirely necessary for good skin. An adult should aim for around 2 liters of plain water a day! (No, coffee and tea do not count even if they do contain water.)
Here are a few tips if you struggle to drink enough water.
- Set an alarm every hour, when your alarm goes off drink a glass of water, as time goes by your body will remind you without an alarm.
- Put berries, herbs, spices, fruit or even veggies in two 1 liter water bottles, put them in the fridge overnight, in the morning start drinking! It’ll be easier to drink more if it tastes yummy, plus, it’s nutritious!
- Try drinking sparkling water with berries and herbs, perhaps even a splash of cranberry juice, just for something a bit fancy. 🙂
- Drink a glass of water after every bathroom break.
- Eat more spicy food! What? Yup, eating spicy food can make you thirstier than eating mild foods.
- Get a water tracking app.
- Carry a BPA free water bottle with you EVERYWHERE!
~Lack of Moisture~
Daily moisturization with the right moisturizer can help to correct any unevenness in your skin tone. Ingredients like snail-secretions, activated charcoal, Vitamin C, melanozyme, soy, angelic root, liquorice root, centella asiatica and arnica flower extract are all good indicators that the product will have a great effect. Once again try and avoid chemicals and stick to more natural ingredients if possible. It is so important to the healing of skin that you moisturize with materials that will help your skin heal!
When you look for products that help specifically with this problem, something to look for is products labeled as “Whitening.” Now don’t freak out! Whitening in Asia simply means that the product will even out and smoothen your complexion…not bleach your skin white. 😀
Some of our favourites are: Farm Stay Green Tea Seed Whitening Water Cream, TOSOWOONG Crystal Intensive Whitening Cream, MIZON All In One Snail Repair Cream.
If all of this does seem too hard, you could always resort to using a good BB cream to cover up any noticeable hyperpigmentation, but if you do wish to correct any skin issues you may have, we hope this article will be of some help to you 🙂
