In Korea, Valentines Day (Feb 14) is a time for women to get gifts for the important guys in their life, whether it be a romantic interest, a dear family member, for a friend or even a work colleague – everyone deserves candy!
So, in response, White Day (Mar 14) is the time for the guys to get the girls something nice too!
White Day (화이트데이) is a chance for all the men who received gifts and treats on V-Day to return the favour and get their partners, friends and family something sweet. So it’s only natural that in the lead up to March 14 candy shops and convenience stores are filled to the brim with treats of all sorts – the most popular being lollipop bouquets (especially Chupa Chups) and, of course, chocolate!
White Day is also celebrated in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and Vietnam – first beginning in Japan in 1978!
Besides chocolates and lollipops, another popular White Day snack is pepero! Besides Pepero Day (which is on November 11) the biggest sale-day for these chocolate coated biscuits is White Day. Both traditional and new pepero, which has chocolate on the inside rather than outside, are very popular gifts for Valentines and White Day.
In the past many male K-Pop groups, such as SHINee, BIGBANG, SPEED and EXO have given their fans candy and special attention on White Day. Other groups, like Vixx, Winner, Seventeen, Led Apple and MONSTA X also prepared broadcasts and special messages for their lucky fans!
