3 Superhero themed K-Dramas You Have To Watch!

We don’t know about you, but we absolutely LOVE Korean Dramas! With so many to choose from in various categories, from historical to high school, there’ll be something out there for you. As this month’s theme of our CULTURE box is SUPERHEROES, we’ve been particularly interested in them – both in fiction and in real life! Here are 3 dramas, all in different genres, with a superhero character that you’re bound to love!

Hero (2012)

The clue is in the title as to what this drama is all about! Set in the year 2020, this futuristic series takes place in the fictional Korean city of Mooyoung. With widespread corruption, rampant inequality and the nation on the verge of bankruptcy, things aren’t looking good for South Korea. Luckily, Kim Heuk-Chul (played by Yang Dong Geun) is here to save the day! Accidentally armed with superhuman powers, his mission is to save the city, and the world, from all the evil that is consuming it. Given the current unpredictable nature of the world, this drama makes for an interesting watch.

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon (2017)

If you’re in the mood for a feel-good film which breaks long established gender stereotypes at the same time, then look no further! This drama is all about Do Bong Soon (played by Park Bo-Young), a woman born with superhuman strength. Due to her hereditary condition that only affects females, she becomes a security guard to cheeky chaebol Ahn Min-hyuk (played by Park Hyung-Sik). After it hits the news that many people are being kidnapped in the district Bong-Soon lives in, she is determined to put a stop to it using her special powers. We think this drama is a real gem and are so sad to see it end so soon!

Iljimae (2008)

Are period dramas more your speed? Then you’ll love this one! Based off of old Chinese folklore, this series finds itself in the Joseon era. We follow the life of Lee Gyeom from when he was a child and witnessed the murder of his father by the King, to 13 years later when all his memories of his tragic past come rushing back. Keen to avenge his family, he hunts down their killers by disguising himself as a thief and leaving handkerchiefs with a red plum blossom branch on them at the scene of the crime, thus making a name for himself as ‘Iljimae’. Along the way, he becomes a hero in the town by solving injustices where he can. Intrigue, thrill and even love are abundant in this drama, so definitely give it a watch! What’s more, there is also a sequel entitled Return of Iljimae.
