Introduction to Korean Books!

Sometimes there’s nothing better than a good book, especially in the fast-paced society that we live in today. Walk into your local bookstore and you’ll find books of every genre, fiction and non-fiction, romance to thrillers and everything in between. However, have you ever considered reading Korean Literature?

The popularity of Korean Literature has risen year on year, with bestsellers across a variety of genres. Some books have even won internationally recognised and prestigious awards. Most recently, the ground-breaking novel ‘The Vegetarian’ by Han Kang won the Man Booker International Prize in 2016. To read our review, please click here.

But what makes Korean books stand out from the rest? Well for one, the plots are just so different compared to what you find in western literature. From start to finish, you never know where the story is going to go. No matter the genre, Korean writers dare to explore and evoke deep emotions in the readers, with no concept or theme being too ‘taboo’.

If you’re looking for somewhere to get started, why not read the coming-of-age I’ll Be Right There by Kyung Sook Shin, political thriller Your Republic is Calling You by Kim Young Ha or the unconventional romance Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. They’ve all been expertly translated into English, along with many others! Happy reading!
