Gallant x Tablo x Eric Nam: ‘Cave Me In’ – REVIEW

Featurings might be commonplace in K-pop, however, crossovers between Western and Korean artists are few and far between. We are pleased to review an amazing effort between American singer-songwriter Gallant, rapper Tablo of Epik High, and K-pop singer Eric Nam! It’s called ‘Cave Me In’.

‘Cave Me In’ is a wholly English track; enunciation is on point since everyone is a fluent speaker. Things start off slow with Tablo spitting out a few phrases, before the beat kicks in and the track adopts a ‘chill’ vibe. This genre suits all three of them, and each artist is allowed an appropriate length of section to shine.

In terms of the larger parts of the song, Gallant begins with his soulful R&B vocals. His high notes bring more energy and stops the track feeling flat. Tablo’s section is next, and the pace alters a little but still works well as the depth and seriousness he puts into the words brings a different element into the ensemble piece. Eric Nam follows after, with his whispery delivery being an effective and welcome contrast. The transitions between them are so slick and seamless!

We are big fans of Tablo, and he doesn’t let us down in ‘Cave Me In! His talent as a wordsmith is evident as he pitches the lyrics and the delivery just right. We love the way he portrays two sides of love with his wordplay.

‘Love has either got you over heels, or overdosed,

It’s got you off your feet, or on your toes,

It’s got you out your seat, or in your place

It’s got you digging it…or your grave’

The MV was filmed on location in Hong Kong, and there are plenty of scenes with Gallant, Tablo and Eric walking around the city at night, lit by colourful neon signs.

When artists can’t physically record in the same place, or the distribution of parts is uneven, music collaborations can fall into the trap of sounding disjointed. ‘Cave Me In’ is a great example of a collaboration done well, and we love the results! We’d go so far even to say that this is one of Eric Nam’s best outings. Perhaps we will see more crossovers in future? What do you think?
