What’s Going on this Month? August 2018!

Summer is just about over and the heat will soon be over, but, all of you who love outdoor activities in Summer worry not! There is still so much going on in Korea for all those who want to enjoy every last minute of the summer to the fullest! August has something for everyone, with festivals focusing on the rich cultural history of Korea, live music events, water-themed events to help you beat the heat, as always, plenty of food-related events, Yum 😀 and oh so much more!

Let’s take a look at some of the festivals and events we are the most excited for!

Hangang Summer Festival

Dates: July 20th – August 19th.

Admission: Varies by program, some may charge fees.

Location: Hangang River and Parks.

The Hangang Summer Festival brings all the fun of a Summer beach party directly to Seoul! This huge event was started by the Hangang Project Headquarters and various civic organizations, and now it is the representative Summer festival of Seoul! With around 80 different programs split into three different themes, Cool Hangang, Heartwarming Hangang, and Together Hangang, there is definitely something for everyone! Whether you’re into water leisure sports, bike riding, camping, paper boat sailing, street & traditional performances, live music, movies, fire art,  night markets, or even the circus! You will without a doubt find something you enjoy at this festival! The festival takes place at multiple locations around the Han River, luckily, public transport is easily available and recommended to get you from one place to the next!

The Great Battle of Hansan Festival

Dates: 10th – 14th of August.

Admission: N/A.

Location: Areas of Tongyeong, like Culture Square, Tongjeyeoung, Yi Sun-sin Park, etc…

Created to commemorate one of the four greatest and most famous sea battles of all time, this festival celebrates the victory of Admiral Yi Sun-Sin (Or Lee Sun-Shin) against the much larger Japanese naval fleet in the battle of Hansan. Visitors to this festival will get to see models of the 거북선 or Turtle Ship designed by Admiral Yi Sun-Sin himself, and the ships that the Japanese used at the time. In addition to learning all about the battle, visitors will also get to experience many different hands-on cultural activities, and be surrounded by the absolutely spectacular natural scenery of the Tongyeong area!

Hwacheon Tomato Festival

Dates: 2nd – 5th of August.

Admission: Varies by program, some are free!

Location: Area of 6, Munhwamaeul 1-gil, Hwacheon-gun, Gangwon-do.

Ever had the desire to throw tomatoes at random people you’ve never met? Then this festival is definitely something you probably didn’t know you needed until now! The Hwacheon Tomato Festival is held every year over four days in August. Contrary to what you might be thinking it isn’t just about playing dodgeball with tomatoes. The festival begins with a pre-event the night before the festivities begin, which is followed by exhibitions, performances, hands-on activities, and so much more! Find a tomato gold ring, tomato soccer, let’s play with tomatoes, and a tomato swimming pool for kids, are just some of the fun activities that you can take part in! You can also purchase some of the incredible quality tomatoes for yourself! Sounds great, doesn’t it? All we have left to say is FOOD FIGHT!

 

Busan Sea Festival

Dates: 1st – 5th of August.

Admission: Free

Location: Haeundae Beach, Gwangalli Beach, Dadaepo Beach, Songdo Beach, Songjeong Beach, etc.

Every year Busan puts on this special festival, which is actually Korea’s first general ocean festival! Visitors to this festival can expect much excitement spread across five different beaches in the area, each one with something different to offer people of all ages! The whole event opens with a special night ceremony that consists of a giant pool party and fireworks show! ^-^ Further participation events also include a water carnival and dance party, along with many other hands-on activities! This is definitely the place to be for anyone wishing to cool off from the heat of the summer sun!

 

Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival

Dates: 10th – 12th of August.

Admission: TBA

Location: PENTA PARK, Incheon.

If you love rock music then, come August, this is the place to be! Rock musicians from all over the world, not just Korea, gather together for a three day and two-night music festival! That’s a total of 60 hours of rocking out with fellow rock fans! Although the three music programs are the main focus of the event, there is also a camping zone, food zone, picnic zone, and playground zone to be enjoyed!

Other festivals taking part this month include the Busan International Rock Festival, Pyeonchang Music Festival & School, Goesan Red Pepper Festival, Chuncheon Dakgalbi & Makguksu Festival, Yeongdong Grape Festival, Daejeon International Wine Fair, and many many more!
