There are so many trends in South Korea that sometimes it can be hard to keep track! From charcoal rubber masks (click here to find out more) to tennis skirts worn by the hottest Seoulites, you can’t predict what the next craze will be.
One of our favourites is a hot topic among foodies, known as ‘치맥’. Like with many trends in Korea, it is the combination of two words – ‘치긴’ (fried chicken) and ‘맥주’ (beer). Its popularity started quite a few years ago now, but it’s still as trendy as ever. In fact, many 치맥 restaurant owners argue that having these two things together has now become part of Korea’s national culture.
What we love about this trend is that it is well loved by people from all socio-economic backgrounds, college students and businessmen alike. Even K-Pop idols have expressed their love for this delicious combination. GFriend’s Umji once stated that she’d love to enjoy 치맥 by the Hangang River with her members. And if that’s not enough to convince you how great this craze is, the city of Daegu has been holding an annual festival dedicated to 치맥 since 2013, attracting 11 million people over 5 days last year alone.
Now, this trend is not just popular in Korea, but all over the world! In China it became hugely popular after being mentioned in the drama ‘My Love From the Star’. What’s more, the first 치맥 restaurant just opened up in London, England, called ‘Wing Wing Chicken’. Be sure to check it out if you live nearby!

Hopefully this gives you an idea as to why this combination is so great, and that now you’re hungry to try it yourself! We certainly are!
