Top K-beauty Trends 2016: 10-step + Jamsu

South Korean beauty trends have changed the game for the cosmetic industry, transforming not only products we use but the methods.

In the midst of sheet masks and bee venom based products, the Korean 10-step skincare routine and Jamsu makeup are two trends which stood out this year.

But why were they so popular? Inspire Me Korea finds out more about the K-beauty fad.

Korean 10-step skincare routine

The ultimate skincare routine and has been adopted by beauty fanatics around the world. Not for the faint hearted as the 10-step routine takes time and patience.

The first step is to remove your makeup with an oil cleanser. Inspire Me Korea recommends Banila Co.’s Clean It Zero because it will dissolve stubborn makeup such as waterproof makeup. Then use a water-based cleanser to remove any traces of makeup and residue.

The third step is to exfoliate but only complete this step once or twice a week. Scrub away dead cells with Skinfood’s Black Sugar Mask. Prep your face by applying a toner to refresh your skin.

We’re half way through and it’s time for the miracle step. Essence. Missha Time Revolution The First Time Treatment Essence will help towards clear and glowing skin. Next step is serums to focus on specific issues such as wrinkles, brightening and discolouration.

Sheet masks is the most fun step in this routine. Place the mask onto the face and relax for 15-20 minutes. Next step is eye cream. Nobody wants wrinkles when they’re 25.

Moisturise and apply sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays. And that’s it. Definitely a long process but your skin will thank you later.

Jamsu makeup

The trend was started by a Japanese beauty blogger in the summer but became incredibly popular in Korea for its innovative method to help your skin stay matte and flawless. Jamsu translates to “diving” or “submerging”. Sounds scary but the results make it worthwhile.

The first step is to apply your face makeup as usual – primer, foundation or BB cream and concealer. Then pat loose powder using a sponge or a dense makeup brush onto certain areas of the face. Wait 30 seconds for the powder to settle into the skin and then it’s time to submerge.

Fill the sink or a bowl with cold water and place your face into it for 30 seconds. Please note do not exceed the 30 seconds. It’s more than enough time for the magic to happen! Finally, gently pat your face dry with a towel. You should notice your skin looking matte and even-toned. A flawless base for the rest of your makeup.

If the idea of putting your face in water doesn’t sound tempting, the alternative is using a spritz or mist spray to dampen the powder. Happy submerging!
