This ‘glass skin’ trend is currently going viral in Korea, and various other parts of the world. However, in the world of k-beauty, trends come and go so quickly that it can be really hard to keep up with all the latest fads. Is it worth all the commotion? How long does it take to get the results? Does it really work ? These are all important questions. Before we judge too quickly, let’s break down what this ‘glass skin’ trend really is all about. 🙂
What is the meaning of the term ‘glass skin’?
Glass skin is skin that looks poreless, clear of blemishes, luminous, and translucent. Similar to the pure state of a piece of glass. Woah! We really need to up our beauty game! #skingoals ;D
Although it isn’t clear where or when this started it has gained so much popularity. A little while ago Ellie Choi posted some photos on her Instagram account, including her daily skincare routine to achieve glass skin. It blew up on the internet and now men and women all around the world want glass skin.
~Ellie Choi’s Daily Skincare Routine~
Some of the brands that Ellie uses in her routine are not Korean, so for those of you who prefer to use Korean beauty brands, we have included some of our favourite products that can be used as alternatives!
Remove all dirt and make-up!
Firstly, we need to remove any make-up, dirt, and excess oil from the skin with make-up remover wipes. This is super important, even if you aren’t trying for glass skin, and also, it feels super refreshing!
Ellie Uses – ‘Neutrogena Fragrance-Free Make-Up Cleansing Towelettes.’
Super gentle on the skin and a favourite of many. Ellie has stated that she only ever uses this brand!
We Use – ‘Nature Republic California Aloe Vera Cleansing Tissue’ or the ‘Innisfree Olive Real Cleansing Tissue.’
Both work excellently and are non-irritable. They leave your skin clean and feeling fresh, and loved. 🙂
Second is cleansing! One of the most important steps of any skincare routine. Cleanse your skin to remove dust and dirt that has accumulated throughout your day.
Ellie Uses – ‘KIEHL’S Ultra Facial Cleanser’ or for a cheaper option the ‘Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser.’
KIEHL’S is an awesome brand, however, it is rather pricey. You can pick up Cetaphil products at your local pharmacy or order it online at a much cheaper price.
We Use – ‘Klairs Gentle Black Deep Cleansing Oil’ or the ‘COSRX Low PH Good Morning Gel Cleanser.’
Klairs & COSRX are two very reliable brands, whose top priority is the health of your skin. We have been loving these products for a while now and will continue using them for a long time to come.
Next up is toning, the highly underrated step. Most don’t believe that using a toner has much effect at all, but we have to disagree, toners are ideal for returning your skin’s PH level and providing the hydration and nutrition that your skin needs.
Ellie’s Uses – ‘CLINIQUE Clarifying Lotion 3.’
CLINIQUE Clarifying Lotion 3 is known for its gentle and moisturizing effect. Lot’s of men and women sware by this brand.
We Use – ‘Secret Key Nature Toner’ or the ‘Holika Holika 98% Aloe Vera Soothing Toner.’
Secret Key has an array of different natural toners and so far we are loving every one! As usual, when we were looking for a bomb product, Holika Holika had our back. Their 98% Aloe Vera Soothing Toner provides moisture and softens the skin. Plus it provides UV protection!
Moisture. Your skin needs plenty of it. Yup! The next step is moisturizing. You should moisturize your skin morning and night, rain or shine, every day without fail.
Ellie Uses – ‘Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream’ or the ‘ Wonjin Effect Water Bomb Cream.’ (Wonjin is a Korean brand.)
Wonjin Effect Water Bomb Cream is an intense moisturizer generally used at the end of your skincare routine. Perfect for your nighttime regimen!
We Use – ‘Nature Republic Polynesia Lagoon Water Hydro Cream’ or the ‘Mizon All-In-One Snail Repair Cream.’
Nature Republic’s Polynesia Lagoon Water Hydro Cream is super light and refreshing, however, the moisturizing effect is seriously no joke! Mizon’s All-In-One Snail Repair Cream is one of our most favourite products EVER!!!
Next up is exfoliation. Ellie said that she uses a face scrub every second day. By doing this she creates a healthy and natural glow to her skin. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells from your skin leaving your face feeling smooth and fresh! If you didn’t exfoliate, dead skin cells would clog up your pores and create blackheads, and breakouts.
Ellie Uses – ‘Skinfood Strawberry Black Sugar Wash-Off Mask.’ (Skinfood is a Korean brand.)
Skinfood is such a brilliant brand that you can’t really go wrong with any of their products. 🙂
We Use – ‘Tony Moly Latte Art Cappuccino Cream-In Scrub’ and the ‘Klairs ‘Gentle Black Sugar Facial Polish.’
The Tony Moly Latte Art Cappuccino Cream-In Scrub not only smells delicious but it also heats up and leaves your skin looking bright and ready to take on the day! Where can you go wrong with Klairs? For those who have super sensitive skin, this product is definitely for you! Klairs Gentle Black Sugar Facial Polish is perfect for those who break out easily or have lots of whiteheads and blackheads.
By using 1-2 face mask sheets a week, you can easily revitalize your skin and give it the healthy boost that it deserves.
Ellie Uses – Any Innisfree mask.
Innisfree’s face masks are perfect for everyone of all skin types. We would highly recommend them to anyone who feels like pampering their skin.
We Use – ‘Beyond Sheet Masks’ and the ‘Papa Recipe Bombee Honey Masks.’
Most don’t know the wonderfulness of the Beyond Sheet Masks, they contain natural ingredients which creates super high moisture retention, leaving skin soft and dewy. Papa Recipe Bombee Honey Masks are great if you have acne or break out often. All of the ingredients are organic. Honey has antibacterial properties and heals your skin while providing hydration and smoothing out your complexion. You should definitely check them out!
Hydration from the inside out!
Lastly, drink water, water is essential for our bodies to function properly. Ellie drinks plenty of water each day and sticks to a healthy diet. Furthermore, she stays far away from any foods that are greasy and contain lots of fat. The sacrifices that we make for beauty… (;¬_¬) oh well~
~Here is the routine one more time~
You can use whichever products you are comfortable with and that suit your skin type the best.
- Remove dirt, make-up, and oil.
- Exfoliate. (Only every second day, or twice a week. Over exfoliation can damage your skin.)
- Hydration and a healthy diet. (Drink your daily quota and eat fresh fruit and veggies.)
- Revitalize. ( Use 1-2 sheet masks a week at a minimum.)
If you decide to try out this routine, please remember that it can take from weeks to months to get noticeable results. Furthermore, not every skin type is the same so you might have to switch and swap some of the products to what suits your skin type the most!
What do you think of this trend? Is it something you see yourself trying, or is it all nonsense? Waste of time? Or genius? Let us know! We would love to chat with you. ^^
