Thanks to the Korean wave (known as 할류), Korean music has been rising in popularity. Even if you’ve never listened to it yourself, you probably know someone who does. And for good reason! In 2015 it was discovered that there are 60 million fans hardcore fans registered in K-Pop fancafés in 109 countries. That doesn’t even begin to cover all the other listeners out there!
But why is Korean music so popular? Some say that the songs are so catchy that once you hear one you can’t get enough, even if you don’t understand Korean yourself. Others think that their talent is what interests people. The idols are trained to be good singers or rappers as well as dancers at the same time. This is something that people often don’t see in the music of their own country, and therefore more fascinating as when the idols go up on stage it is truly a performance.
If you’re curious to hear some Korean music yourself, or want to introduce someone to it, we have some suggestions for where to start! If hip-hop is your style, then go for BTS’ ‘Dope’. Twice’s ‘Cheer Up’ is great if you want to hear a classic, happy K-Pop number. But if you’re curious about Korean music that’s not K-Pop, then why not try ‘woo ah’ by R&B artist Crush? Happy listening!
