Here at IMK we are very passionate about KPOP, and with 2016 drawing to a close, we’ve decided to do a little piece collating the best and most interesting MVs released so far, featuring BTS, BLACKPINK, and ZICO! In no particular order, we start with….
1. BTS – BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS
BTS generally produce really good music videos, and Blood Sweat and Tears is no different, featuring stunning visuals, fine art, and typically imaginative dance choreography. Atypical, however, are the themes of the MV, hitting on subjects like desire, falling from grace, and the mortality of man. Drawing inspiration from Herman Hesse, the fact that BTS has produced a song that hits on such hard-hitting topics, and presented it in such a way that breaks records (fastest KPOP MV to reach 10 million views, most views in 24 hours), is a great reflection on just how far BTS have come in the past few years, and thus justifies its position on this list.
2. BLACKPINK – WHISTLE
Black Pink’s debut MV Whistle was a great way to introduce themselves to the world with colourful verses, and a catchy hook. However good the song may be, it’s the visuals that are really noteworthy, for a couple of reasons. Firstly the girls themselves ooze with charisma, comparable to the early days of the newly disbanded 2NE1, with Lisa taking the CL role of bringing gravitas to the video. Secondly, the sets are all beautifully shot and so well set up, that even the most mundane of sets, an empty laundry room, extremely captivating.
3. ZICO – I AM YOU, YOU ARE ME
The incredibly prolific Zico released this laid back R&B track with a smooth rap feature, playing out as just a really cool track, with the calm rhythmic tones setting him apart from the swathes of hard hip-hop artists out there just making him more interesting than the rest. It is this feel that carries on in the MV, which almost entirely takes place in an empty supermarket, with one cashier and one customer. It’s greatest strength is it’s simplicity and that the MV conveys such a strong love story almost entirely with their nonverbal communication, and the overriding cool vibe, make this one of the standout MVs of the year
BONUS! JYP, CONAN AND STEVEN YEUN -FIRE
Though this is far from a conventional KPOP MV, this may be the most entertaining MV to date. Leaning heavily into the comedy and star power of Conan and Steven Yeun, with JYP ‘teaching’ them to be KPOP idols after giving them a KPOP flavoured drink. If it sounds ridiculous it is, but somehow it just works.
SUZY BAEKHYUN – DREAM
4MINUTE – HATE
DEAN – BONNIE & CLYDE
GAIN – CARNIVAL
BTS – FIRE
JAY PARK X 1MILLION – ALL I WANNA DO
MOBB – HIT ME
SMSTATION – LIL’ SOMETHING
