Story by Mariyam:
My love for everything Korean started because of Kpop, it was actually an EXO react video by the Fine Bros that started the adventure. I was so fascinated about how a boyband could have that many members, could dance and then when I realised they had both Korean and Chinese versions of their epic music videos I was in awe. I guess when you fall in love with Kpop, it’s actually really difficult not to then translate that love into Kdramas, Korean reality shows and ultimately the culture and language.
I began to ardently watch The Return of Superman & Weekly Idol, which I must say, for a newbie to the world of Kpop, is the best show to learn a lot about your favourite Kpop groups! Then of course Kdramas, the first one I saw was EXO Next Door, it was only then did I realise how incredible idols are and how hard Koreans work in all walks of life. Since then I’ve spent many nights awake, hooked to the classic and new series and every time I fall in love with a new group, there’s a whole new avenue of Korea to go down, new towns & dialects.
One upside of being a Londoner in love with Korea is how multicultural our city is, in less than a year I’ve been lucky enough to visit a Korean festival – hosted to teach us about Korean culture, it included beautiful cultural dances, scrumptious food and even the amazing Kpop girl group F(x), who performed for the first time in London! Plus, for my birthday I got treated to my first ever Kpop concert – Infinite, they were incredible. If I hadn’t realised how hard idols work, I did that night, they performed for over 2 hours without a break, with choreographed dances, live singing and they even made us laugh!
I hope to visit Seoul this summer, so I’m even more excited to receive my Inspire Me Korea subscription box every month to learn as much as I can about the culture, history and important phrases that I’ll need on my adventure.
