With the final episode of historical K-Drama ‘Hwarang’ having aired last month, you might be looking for something similar to watch. Well instead of a drama, how about a movie? Recently, we watched ‘Seondal: The Man Who Sells A River, a movie based on folktale ‘Bongyi Kim Seondal’. With a stellar cast, including EXO’s Xiumin, and a comedic storyline with dramatic moments sprinkled throughout, this movie exceeded our expectations.
The story is centred around swindler Kim Seondal, who is renowned across the nation for his crimes. From stealing gold bars from the treasury to selling a phoenix that was actually a chicken, this handsome crook pulled off a lot of schemes. However, he wouldn’t have been able to do it without his accomplices. Partner in crime Bo-Won, female Buddhist Yoon and close friend Gyeon make up his team. Their new mission? To steal tobacco from the most powerful man in the country, Sung Dae-Ryeon.
This movie had us laughing and crying in equal measure. Although there wasn’t a typical love story in this plot, we loved the bromance between Seondal and Gyeon. We thought the way Gyeon idolised his older friend and how Seondal tried his best to protect Gyeon from harm was sweet, and added another dimension to both their personalities. Each character has their own unique qualities which got us invested in the film’s storyline. The only downside is that it’s quite hard to pick a favourite!
Without giving too much away, this movie will capture your attention and two hours will fly by! We love how it’s an adaption of an ancient folktale, as it makes the Korean culture and history more accessible to the public.
