Although heartthrob Jang Hyun-seung left boy group ‘Beast’ a few months ago, they came back strong with the song Butterfly which was pre-released ahead of their full album. While their previous title track YeY would be perfect to get into the party mood, Butterfly is a moving ballad which made us feel very emotional.
The song is about a painful breakup; a common theme in a lot of Korean music. However, instead of it being a song about hatred towards the other person, such as SISTAR’s I like That (click here for our review), it’s about the acceptance that the relationship has ended and the hope that the hurt of them being gone will be over soon.
There are only two sets used in the music video; one an open field filled with bright blue flowers of various shades and the other a forest with various pieces of furniture, making it look as if they are living there. However, all the members look sad even though they are in a tranquil setting. Perhaps they have decided to move away somewhere new so that they can try and move on from the girl who left.
Instrumentally, the melody is also very simple with the piano leading the track. This simplicity however does not mean that the song is basic, rather that the depth lies within the lyrics which allows the piece to be all the more powerful.
Overall, we think that Beast did an amazing job despite losing a member and we are very excited to hear the rest of their album!
